passed away peacefully on January 11th at age 85 in Cloverdale BC.

Devoted Husband of Anne Alphonso Fernandes

Loving Father of Elroy (Nevin), Mayola (Louis) and Maria (Lance).

He was born on February 27, 1935 in Goa, India and was raised in the idyllic, coastal village of Cansaulim. In 1971, he married Anne Alphonso, a school teacher and devoted wife of nearly 50 years. Together, they raised three beautiful children. Derrick worked for the Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) as a senior accountant before retiring after 35 years of service. He also founded Derferns Commercial Institute, an organization that promoted education and training in the field of administrative services. His institute benefited the local community and provided many employment opportunities. He and his wife invested in the education of their children, who settled in Canada and the United States. In 2017, Derrick and Anne immigrated to Canada to be closer to their family.

He will be dearly missed and fondly remembered for his unwavering commitment to his family; his generosity to friends, relatives and colleagues; his resounding faith; and his ever-present positive attitude in spite of life’s challenges. These qualities live on in his children and in all those whom he touched.
